This Book is Anti-Racist covers the broad scope of oppression of different races, and provides uplifting examples of individuals who rose above to become leaders and mentors. Author Tiffany Jewell drew upon her experience as a bi-racial anti-racist, anti-bias educator and activist in crafting the book. Illustrator Aurélia Durand, hailing from Paris, France, has dedicated her work to bright, vibrant, fierce depictions of people of color.

This Book is Anti-Racist received positive reviews from many sources, including Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, USA Today, and Time Magazine, and Essence, and quickly became a New York Times bestseller. However, the book has been banned in classrooms and libraries in numerous states after complaints by parents. In particular, the book has been described as causing some students to experience discomfort or shame, a claim that has been lodged generally against materials which educate on historic racism in the United States.
