On September 29th California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed into law the Transparency in Frontier Artificial Intelligence Act, SB53, a further development of regulation of AI at the state level. California is proving to be a model for other states to follow in implementing AI safeguards.

State leadership in regulating AI is becoming increasingly important considering congress has been at a stalemate with any meaningful legislation. 

This act deals with safety issues in Generative AI. It also creates protections for whistleblowers who spot risks. Although the legislation deals with safety issues with AI rather than specific issues of concert to visual artists with GenAI, sensible legislation which offers up safeguards is nevertheless an essential step to move the needle and laudable. 

“With a technology as transformative as AI, we have a responsibility to support that innovation while putting in place commonsense guardrails to understand and reduce risk,” California State Sen. Scott Wiener (D).

The Graphic Artists Guild stands in support of sensible legislation to regulate GenAi. We hope more states will start to jump on board with their own legislation.
