Steve Wilhite, who invented the format for Compuserv in the late 1980s, confirmed that the correct pronunciation is "jiff". Steve made his pronouncement at the 2013 Webby Awards, where he was honored on the 25th anniversary of his invention.

ICON8, the Illustration Conference taking place in July 2014 has issued a call for papers and presentations from academics and professional illustrators. The conference organizers will be conducting an Educating Illustrators in the 21st Century Symposium, and are soliciting entries which "address the myriad changes in the methods of teaching, creating, and delivering illustration now and in the coming decades". The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2013.

Over the past year, Guild member and designer Theresa Whitehill has had a unusual relationship with software giant Adobe: that of both judge and mentor in their student Adobe Design Achievement Awards. A few months after judging the ADAA winners, her experience was extended when she was asked to mentor one of the student finalists. While the time commitment has posed a challenge, it’s one from which Whitehill has derived satisfaction and growth.

If length is any sign of success, our Ask a Pro webinar with illustration and design students coast-to-coast was a hit. Students of Illustration, animation, and graphic design logged on October 19 to ask questions of illustrator Ed Shems and design director Rebecca Blake, including entire classrooms from MassArt in Boston and the Art Institute in San Francisco. The webinar lasted over 2 hours – an hour longer than anticipated – and covered both questions submitted in advance and ones entered into the webinar chatstream in real time.
