ABOUT THIS ARTIST

Matt Hebermehl, Visual Artist

As a resident of Los Angeles County I am inspired daily by the local diversity of land and people; by the dense layers of neighborhoods and freeways; by the sense of being on a cultural and continental edge. In my practice I set out to create visual vortexes, shape-shifting to fit the space and the occasion, from the crumpled confines of scrap paper to the broad expanse of a stadium wall. Compelling and often collaborative, I aim to transform shared spaces and enhance collective experiences. Before moving to Los Angeles, I lived in Savannah, GA where I co-founded the public art initiative SeeS.A.W (See Savannah Art Walls). Under the banner of SeeSAW, I worked with the city of Savannah to create an official mural ordinance and mural application process, and successfully petitioned for a designated mural wall that I curated with SeeS.A.W co-founder James Zdaniewski. From 2012 to 2015, SeeS.A.W produced seventeen projects in four states with funding from (but not limited to) a Kickstarter campaign, and grants from the Sunshine Polka Dot Foundation (San Francisco, CA), the Left Tilt Fund (Oakland, CA), and the Center For Great Communities (Covington, KY). I have earned awards from American Illustration, Society of Illustrators (NY), Society of Illustrators – Los Angeles, and the Rush Arts Philanthropic Foundation. My work is in the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art (Savannah, GA), the Art Collection at Mercedes Benz Stadium (Atlanta, GA),
Arthur B. Kouwenhoven, Jr., Savannah College of Art & Design, and the 2019 L.A. County Time Capsule.
