Learn About The Western Region

The Western Region is the previous home of the Northern California and Seattle Chapters.

The Western Region provides an ever-expanding range of resources and opportunities for Guild members in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Alaska and Hawaii whose backgrounds span various artistic disciplines and skill levels. We are here to provide a voice for students, associates and professional artists so we can improve our profession together.

When becoming a member of the Graphic Artists Guild you will also become affiliated with one of five Guild Regions.

Once a member you will receive mailings and communications from the National office including your copy of Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing and Ethical Guidelines, our quarterly print newsletter titled Guild News, a monthly email which is a digest of articles and interviews from our blog, and updates about member benefits including webinar registration deadlines.

Your Regional communications will keep you posted about local events to benefit your communication design career including lectures, skills training and networking events.

Please email Paula Hinkle, National Administrative Director for the Graphic Artists Guild, to learn your regional affiliation of the Graphic Artists Guild and to receive the Guild email newsletter which includes local and national events: membership@graphicartistsguild.org.

With Larry Asher

2300 7th Ave. Suite B
Seattle, WA 98121

Whether you set out in life to be a copywriter or writing snuck its way onto your to-do list, learning some principles and secrets of great copywriting can make you a better, more effective communicator. Simply knowing a bit more about writing can also erase your anxiety when confronted by a blank sheet of paper (or a blank computer screen). Whether you write for print or digital projects, this workshop will give you tips and ideas you can put to work immediately as we cover:

The four ingredients of all great marketing writing

   • The science of persuasion: making your point convincingly

   • The differences between writing for the web vs. print

   • What makes for great headlines, what makes for great body copy

   • Ways to continually improve your writing skills

Larry Asher is a creative director who’s a copywriter who’s a problem solver who’s an author who’s a teacher of creativity and writing. He does the former as principal of Worker Bees, Inc., a marketing communications firm serving healthcare industry clients such as Swedish Medical Center, and Providence Health & Services. He does the latter as the co-director of the School of Visual Concepts, a professional development center for the Seattle creative and marketing community.

His advertising work for Nike, the Washington Lottery, and Regence BlueCross & BlueShield have received some of the highest honors bestowed by the ad industry. In 2010 he was the winner of the Legacy Award from the Seattle Show, and in 2014 received a similar honor — the Silver Medal Award — from the American Advertising Federation. recognizing a career’s worth of pushing envelopes and paving roads.

SEATTLE NOVEMBER WORKSHOP

Your Brand; Your Way

With Susan Straub-Martin

Wed. Nov. 19, 2014
12-1:30 p.m. Social Time 11:15 a.m.

Susan Straub-Martin is a passionate artist, storyteller and purveyor of hugs. Her childhood nickname, "freckle-faced strawberry", inspired her company names, Strauberry Studios and Strauberry Graphics. In 1984 she established the studio in San Diego, as a boutique greeting card company which quickly grew as a graphic design firm.

In 1998 Susan moved herself and her studio to Seattle where she continues to work on diverse graphic design projects. She has illustrated international brands for highly respected companies including Disney and Warner Brothers.

Susan began drawing at the age of five with a box of 64 crayons and never lost her love for children's books and stuffed animals. She continued drawing unique characters in her own style.

An appreciation of cartoons and those unique characters inspired Susan to begin writing and illustrating children's books and creating character toys.

You can check out her work at strauberrygraphics.com and strauberrystudios.com

April 30, 2014 Workshop

Negotiation with Confidence

Presented by Ted Leonhardt

Does negotiating intimidate you? Have you left a meeting with the vague feeling that you caved in? Feeling gun-shy and giving in too soon is common in the creative community. This workshop will show you how such costly missteps can be avoided.

In his conversations with design graduates, friends, clients, and colleagues about their experiences, Ted Leonhardt found undeniable patterns; ones creative people encounter and struggle with time and again.

Ted Leonhardt will help you identify principles and strategies to overcome these barriers to success and help designers of every stripe earn more money. You’ll learn how to nail it and:

Ted Leonhardt

•            Beat back feelings of intimidation when negotiating
•            Jump start a stalled interview
•            Maintain your integrity at every stage of a job search
•            Always behave like an expert
•            Attract the interviews you want
•            Never leave money on the table that should be yours!

Seattle native Ted Leonhardt graduated from The Burnley School of Professional Art. In 1985, with his wife Carolyn, he established The Leonhardt Group (now FITCH). The Leonhardt Group grew to fifty employees and $10 million in annual fee sales by the time they sold in 1999.
